Seven en-suite rooms, a log fire that rarely goes out, a fully licensed bar and a kitchen worth the journey. Officially The Kings Arms. Known to everyone as The Dusthole.
There has been an inn on this spot since the 1400s, when Shepton Mallet ran on wool and water and the road past the door was already old. People have been coming in from the cold ever since: for a bed, a drink, a plate of something good, and the kind of welcome that does not come from a manual.
We kept what matters and quietly saw to the rest. The beams still lean where they have always leaned. The fire is real. The rooms are booked direct, with breakfast cooked to order and evening meals by advance arrangement. What you will not find is a booking screen or a call centre. Ring the inn, speak to Tony, and your room is held.
The dust, the hole, and the long welcome
The Kings Arms has stood off the old Fosse Way for some six hundred years. The name everyone uses came from the flour mill across the way: millers and labourers would come in at the end of a shift, still white with dust, for a pint and a warm by the fire. The dust settled. The welcome never has.
